What makes a professional photographer?
Archive - Originally posted on "The Horse's Mouth" - 2004-10-23 11:27:50 - Graham EllisEarlier this month, we travelled on the "Costa Mediterranean" on a one week cruise, and we snapped hundreds of pictures. Some good, some dubious in their quality to say the least. And during the cruise we attended a most interesting talk by Kevin Gilbert, professional photographer formerly of the White House press core. The pictures he showed were spectacular and I would be delighted if I could produce photos a tenth as good as his (but then, he wouldn't be looking to give Perl courses, I don't suppose!).
Yet with the coming of good, low cost digital photography, the question can be asked more and more "what's the difference between a professional photographer and an amateur", and Kevin, putting himself down a little, answered that "With a professional photographer, you'll only see one in ten of the pictures he takes, whereas an amateur will show you all of his". What a thought-provoking comment though.
