Broughton Gifford Halt, TransWilts Railway Line

Just a short distance from Melksham, the road to Broughton Gifford crosses the TransWilts railway line and in 1903 a halt was built there where local trains would stop on request. It closed in 1955 and, as it had been built of wood, there's nothing left to see of the platforms today.

The halt was close to Melksham and - looking into the distance - you can see the buildings of CountryWide Farmers, Asda, the National Trust and the new retirement facility from the bridge.

Very careful examination of the undergrowth on the north east corner of the bridge reveals where steps used to lead down to the platform - difficult to see from above, and perhaps I am imagining things.

But don't be tempted to cross the fence and take a look - Broughton Gifford Halt may be long closed and gone, but the railway line is active - more now that even in recent years; here's the 12:02 (Sunday) train from Melksham to Trowbridge and Westbury - part of a service of 11 regional trains (6 one way and 5 the other) that serve the line every Sunday.
