Marvelous news today that the Wiltshire Cabinet has approved the financing of additional TransWilts trains from Westbury via Trowbridge and Melksham to Chippenham and Swindon. Here's an example of what it will mean... in this case for passengers to London.

Change at Swindon on all services. Where the Paddington to Swindon train carries on to Chipppenham, you may also change there are you will find Chippenham station more convenient for that.

Services in green are super offpeak. Services in blue are offpeak. Services in purple are peak trains. A superoffpeak return from Melksham to London (using green trains) costs £46.50; offpeak the price is £60.50 (ticket valid on blue and green trains); anytime tickets, valid on all trains, cost £152.00 return. Note that the inverted times are a bus connection from Chippenham, subject to an extra fare of £4.00

Return tickets between Melksham and London are valid for outward travel on the date on the ticket, and for return within a month. If you are travelling one way on a peak train and the other way on a non-peak train, it may be cheaper for you to buy singles each way.

If you are travelling off peak (or super offpeak) in a group, Groupsave 3 and Groupsave 4 tickets allow 3 or 4 adults to travel for the price of 2 on most dates, and children for an extra pound. So (example) a group of 4 adults and 4 children can travel to London for the day on a Saturday, and back, for a total of £101.00 There is also a wide variety of advanced fares and first class fare available.

At Paddington, you must always purchase your ticket before joining the train. At Trowbridge, you must purchase your ticket before boarding if the ticket office is open. There are no ticket sales facilities at Melksham. You may join the train without a ticket, and should ask the conductor to sell you a ticket at the earliest opportunity.

Times shown above are the usual schedule. There are frequently engineering works at weekends, and you should check your Saturday and Sunday times prior to travel. In the summer of 2015, there will be a 2 week period where trains are replaced by buses in order to allow for electrification works.

Prices shown are valid until January 2014, and are subject to detailed conditions which are available from railway websites and ticket sellers. Further services run via Westbury and Bath; typically these take longer, and prices may differ.
