Santa Trip - Melksham Railway Development Group, 2012

I'm told it's the 14th year that Santa has been on the train from Melksham in the weeks before Christmas. In recent years, he's travelled up to Swindon and back on the 17:25 train ... this year with 80 adults and 70 children. A great time was had by all; the children met Santa, and got presents and a soft drink. Parents and grandparents met Santa too ... and they were given a warming drink and a mince pie too. The train got back to Melksham on time at 18:45, but left at least ten minutes late because there were so many happy people getting off.

Thanks to members of the Melksham Railway Developement Group who helped to organise the outing. To Melksham Tourist Information Centre for selling the tickets. To First Great Western for providing an extra carriage. To the Toy Shop in Melksham who's staff helped Santa choose presents (something MRDG members aren't very good at) and to the other Melksham stores who provided mince pies, soft drinks, wrapping paper and so on. MRDG is proud to be able to provide all the extras needed for the trip from Melksham's shops.

There's a serious side to this too - as well as being a great evening, it's a chance to remind people (or in some cases have people learn for the first time) that Melksham has a station, and a train service - all be it a limited one at present. Over the years, the timing and destination of the Santa trip has varied based on the train schedule; sometimes we've had a shopping day in Swindon, and in other years there was a trip to Westbury. Looking forward to next year, we're currently on course to have a much improved service running from December, and that will mean that we'll have the flexibility to review both the timing and destination of the trip.
