Steam train calls at Melksham - Pictures

To my knowledge, this morning was the first time in nearly 50 years that a steam train stopped at Melksham - Steam Dreams running an excursion from Westbury to Canterbury. Midweek seems an unlikely day of the week to attract custom - hardly "prime time" with many people who might wish to go at work, and a schedule that has the steam train waiting for track space in its schedule at many places along the way - she won't be back until after 11 O'Clock tonight, with less than three hours in Canterbury.

The Cathedrals Express arrives in Melksham, hauled by 60163 "Tornado", the steam locomotive that was built new and ran for the first time in 2008.

The platform was crowded - a sprinkling of photographers and enthusiasts, but for the most part people who were travelling - taking the day out. Good to see such a crowd; hardly a surprise to those of us who know Melksham and the TransWilts, but it may come as a bit of a shock / reminder as to just what a requirement there is for others (I certainly hope so!)

Rail travel isn't all about the journey time - it's also about the comfort of travel. I could drive to Canterbury quicker than that train will get there. But I would have arrived tired and unable then to work / enjoy myself. This through-the-window picture illustrates symbolically the comfort and utility of rail travel. Whether you choose to eat, work, or relax you'll arrive fresher and more productive at a destination than if you were to drive. Best for the folks who specify the railway to remember this, and NOT try to cram too many people into too close seats, nor to eliminate seats to allow more standing room.

And don't get the wrong message here... it looks like the station is quiet and no-one is travelling. Sure, it will look quiet when there isn't another train due for over 11 hours. Provide a train each way every two hours - that's a train each hour calling, and people will use it!

Wishing those travelling a good day in Canterbury.

Wishing for the sake of our community that we'll have regular trains, all day, every day in the near future!
