In researching the history of Melksham, and of people who lived here and who have made a real difference, we are being taken to some distant places and meeting some fascinating people. So it was yesterday that we found ourselves visiting All Science and Medical, meeting Bill, and having the opportunity to view what's a marvellous collection of things which "aren't made like that anymore". I mentioned sliderules to Bill, and for the first (and probably last) time in my life, I was taken into a bathroom where a sliderule some six feet long is mounted on the lintel above the bath.
Bill has a labour of love with his collection - which he makes good use of in hiding out for use on film and TV sets; Lisa mentioned the recent TV series "Call the Midwife" and, sure, All Science and Medical had been a source. And Bill's card lists The English Patient, Angela's Ashes, Sweeney Todd, Pirates of the Carribean and others, and he mentioned other upcoming films too.
We came across Bill via Ebay - the item that was of particular relevance to Melksham is physically rather large, and rather specialised - and as a result has been purchased rather than hired, and needed collecting. See [here] - Lisa's Blog if you want to know more, come to our museum on or after 12tm May if you want to see it.
