On a sunny afternoon in London

A lovely afternoon in London - I sat out in Paternoster Square, almost in the shadow of St Paul's, between completing the Deploying Apache and Tomcat Course I was giving just north of the river, and the iOS (iPad and iPhone) programming session I was attending up near The Angel. There are certain animals you simply don't expect to find in the centre of London, but look around and you may be surprised.

I remember this old, bombed-out church just across from St Paul's tube; when we moved to London in 1959, there were still many gaps, like missing teeth, where the second world war had carved gaps in the city. Over the following years they filled, all bar this one that still remained - and has now become something of a memorial. But gone are the remains of foundantions and brickwork, and the bright yellow ragwort growing from the crevices - to be replaced by a peaceful garden.

Gone too, at least in the early evening, are the carcasses of pigs and cattle which I remember piled high on barrows here - for this is Smithfield meat market. I would rather suspect they're all neatly packages and wrapped these days with modern food hygeine standards ...
