How not to call when job seeking ...

How to lose any chance you may have when calling to ask about a job:
* Call with the family in the room making plenty of noise.
* Sound desparate - ask for "anything".
* Don't give your name or introduce yourself.
* Make it obvious you haven't researched the company you're calling.
* Blurt out your request to the person who picks up the phone - don't look for the right person.
* Don't ask who you're talking to.
* Admit you've just been declared redundant at 17 and sound huffy about it.
* Make it clear that your motive is only financial ("pay") rather than something you might enjoy too.

All in a two minute phone call this afternoon. This young person didn't realise that the phone had been answered by the person who was best placed to help ... and then failed to impress quite spectacularly.
