I gave a flippant answer to a question Lisa asked me earlier - "when did the 1891 census take place" and I answered 1891. ;-). Of course, she was looking for the date within the year. That wasn't as easy to find as you might expect - so here's a full list:

1801 - 10th March
1811 - 27th May
1821 - 28th May
1831 - 30th May
1841 - 7th June
1851 - 30th March
1861 - 7th April
1871 - 2nd April
1881 - 3rd April
1891 - 5th April
1901 - 31st March
1911 - 2nd April
1921 - 19th June
1931 - 26th April
1941 - missed during 2nd world war
1951 - 8th April
1961 - 23rd April
1971 - 25th April
1981 - 5th April
1991 - 21st April
2001 - 29th April
2011 - 27th March

From 1801 to 1831 few records still exist
1841 to 1901 records are available online
1911 records will be available from 1.1.2012
Government proposals are that there will be no further censuses after 2011

From a population count in 1801, more and more data has been collected at censuses over the years, including questions on religion and ethnicity introduced in 2001 and 1991 respectively. New in 2011 will be questions on what passport(s) you hold, and if you are a migrant when you arrived and how long you intend to stay. There will now be questions relevant to civil partnerships too.
