Extra MySQL course dates (2 day course, UK)

We've added a MySQL course into our calendar - on Saturday and Sunday 20th and 21st February, at Well House Manor. The course includes a general introduction to SQL, with a slant towards the MySQL flavor, and the principles of database design too ... as well as the installation and configuration of MySQL.

This course is also scheduled on other dates throughout the year - usually on weekdays for delegates who are in "9 to 5" employment ... but not always. See our course description page for other dates, prices, etc.

You may wonder why we're offering just a short (2 day) course on a database / SQL product, when others offer a week or more of training. That's partly do do with the database itself - MySQL is designed as piece of software that it's easy for you to download, install, and try out - according to the authors (with who I spent a few days in 2004) it should be possible to go from having nothing on a computer to having it available for testing in quarter of an hour. Computers are faster these days, so I can do it in less than 5 minutes ;-). And it's partly to do with the level of training needed - you can do very powerful things with MySQL, but the majority of users don't need to - they need an overview of SQL, the fundamentals of database design, how to write code to interface to a database, and keep it portable and robust, and they need to appreciate how important backup and restore is, and how to do it. They need to know a little bit about setting up user accounts, and they need to go a little bit deeper into some of the uses of the SELECT command. But the majority of delegates we train don't need to know about triggers, replication, cluster tables .... so we won't waste their time and their employer's money teaching it. In any case, they can always ask for an extra day or read the manual, which is rather good as a reference document!
