Taking Equipment offshore to run a course
Archive - Originally posted on "The Horse's Mouth" - 2004-11-02 08:10:54 - Graham EllisI learn something every day .... and one of the things I learnt yesterday was how I can take equipment to and from places that are within the United Kingdom, but are not part of the EU. Yes - you read that right; the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are not a part of the EU, but rather what I think is called "offshore" locations on our doorstep.
So why would I even be interested in taking equipment to Jersey or Douglas? Well - there are a number of big companies that have operations based at such places and indeed we have trained people who have travelled from both groups of islands in the past. Now we have a whole group who want a course there. It turns out that running a course on the Isle of Man is easy, as are courses on the Channel Islands.
Taking equipment to one of these locations:
a) Complete a customs and excise form (call their help line on 0845 010 9000 and they'll post one)
b) Produce two lists of the equipment to be taken, including serial Nos., on company letterhead
c) Check the equipment out with customs as you leave the country. They will stamp and retain a copy
d) Check the equipment back in with the second list on your return.
I've been advised to phone ahead to the Ferry port to ensure that there's a customs rep on duty.
